Visit the best macarons shops and concessions this side of Paris!

Have you always been keen to learn more about the history behind the (not so) humble macaron? Does the celadon-green colour of a Ladurée gift box haunt your sweet dreams? Have you secretly hoped for a Pierre Hermé shop to open close to you? If you answer with a strong yes to the previous questions, Macarons and Mews, my new private tour set in Knightsbridge and Belgravia might just be the right thing for you and your group!

Pastry jewels, macarons are to be found in a dazzling palette of colours and flavours.

While visiting the best purveyors of macarons and learning more about the fascinating pastry chefs behind them, we will also explore the secret passages and hidden mews of Belgravia and Knightsbridge. Following the traces of a lost river, we will be unraveling tales about a haunted pub as well as the devastating blaze which destroyed the Pantechnicon. For good measure, the world famous department stores of Knightsbridge – Harrods and Harvey Nichols –  and the fascinating stories behind these retail giants will make cameo appearances too!

Belgravia and Knightsbridge are full of picturesque mews houses.

Originally conceived as a leaving-do walk for Kat, the blogger extraordinaire behind the Lady Loves Cake website, this private group tour can be customised to suit any special occasion. Weddings, anniversaries or corporate functions, your imagination is the limit. This tour is generally aimed at seasoned Londoners and tourists who share a passion for history as well as a sweet tooth. (That being said, savoury macarons are available too!)

In regards to purchasing the macarons, the logistics are simple. While visiting the shops, you can set a budget and the sweet treats can be bought collectively for the group (and shared as a birthday present, for example) or purchased individually by members of your party. Depending on the size of your group, we can also include a break for refreshments.

Ladurée is credited for creating the macaron as we’ve come to know it today.

The inspiration for this walk has come from the movie ‘Marie Antoinette‘, Sofia Coppola’s ‘modern’ biopic about the last Queen of France. A veritable feast for the eyes, the film has often been credited for popularising the now ubiquitous macarons across the globe. Let them eat cake, indeed, and the clip from the movie below shall set the tone for our tour.

Conveniently located on the Piccadilly Line, the meeting point for the tour is by the Lanesborough Hotel just outside Hyde Park Corner Station (use Exit 4). While the regular tour route ends near the Victoria and Albert Museum, please note the finishing point can be altered upon request.
